20ft Shipping Container Workshop Conversion – Creating a Practical, Flexible Workspace

A standard shipping container can provide a strong and secure starting point for a workshop, but the way it is converted makes all the difference to how practical that workspace is day to day.
For this project, we converted a 20ft shipping container into a purpose-built workshop, adding additional access, ventilation, electrical facilities and protection against condensation.
The result is a secure and versatile workspace that retains the strength and durability of the original shipping container while being much better suited to everyday use.
Creating Better Access to the Workshop

One of the main requirements of this conversion was improved access.
Rather than relying solely on the container’s original cargo doors, we installed an additional set of cargo doors into the side of the container.
This gives the customer the option of accessing the workshop from either side, which can make a significant difference when positioning the container within a yard or working area.
It also means that both sets of doors can be opened when required, providing much better airflow through the workshop — particularly useful when carrying out practical work inside the container.
The new door opening was carefully fabricated and reinforced to maintain the structural integrity of the container.
Electrical Installation

To make the container suitable for use as a working space, we also installed the required electrical system.
Having the electrics incorporated as part of the conversion means the workshop can arrive prepared for practical use rather than the customer having to arrange the installation separately afterwards.

The workshop also has an external plug-in electrical connection, making it straightforward to connect to a suitable power supply once positioned. The customer can plug in and use the fitted lighting and sockets, subject to an appropriate electrical supply and safe connection.
At Clarke’s Solutions, electrical layouts can be tailored around how a container will actually be used, whether that means lighting, sockets, machinery supplies or other requirements.
Protecting Against Condensation
Condensation is an important consideration when converting a steel shipping container into a workshop.
Changes in temperature can cause moisture to form on the underside of an untreated steel roof, particularly during colder weather.
As part of this conversion, the container received an anti-condensation treatment, helping to manage this risk and making it more suitable for its new purpose as a workshop.
Built Around the Customer

One of the advantages of converting a shipping container is that there isn't a single standard specification that every customer has to accept.
The starting point may be the same steel container, but the finished space can be designed around what the customer actually needs.
For this project, the combination of additional side cargo doors, improved airflow, electrics and condensation protection turned a standard 20ft container into a much more practical working environment.
Other projects can incorporate different door arrangements, windows, insulation, internal lining, electrical installations and other modifications depending on how the finished container will be used.
